Township C, Upton
By Car: Take Rt 16 west from Oquossoc. Take left on Fishpond Road. Drive to gate (make sure to have detailed maps to get to gate)
Acquired in 2004 as a result of the licensing of Middle and Upper Dam, the 283 acres includes four miles of the Rapid River, shoreline around Pond In the River and lands near Middle Dam.
The property is a late successional forest of mature over-story white pines, some in excess of 160 years old. This rarity, combined in a natural community of interacting animals and plants, occurs in a landscape where human intervention has been minimal. This high value conservation forest was registered in Maine’s Critical Area Program in 1983 for the significant whitewater rapids that extend from Middle Dam to Umbagog Lake.
Home to author Louise Dickinson Rich and lured by such icons as Captain Barker and Carrie Stevens, the history alone lures people on foot to explore the 3 ½ miles of logging trails to observe the land so rich in history.
