EcoVenture

All about EcoVenture

EcoVenture is a unique summer day camp founded by the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust in 1998. Funded through grants and the generosity of Trust members, it is available to local and visiting children entering grades 1 through 9. In 2009, EcoVenture runs on from Tuesday, July 14th to Wednesday, August 12th.

Campers entering 1st through 5th grade meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:50 to 3:00 starting on July 14th. NEW THIS YEAR campers entering 6th through 9th grade will meet for a total of four days including two overnights. The dates of camp are July 16/17 and August 6/7 and camp starts are 8:50 on Thursday and ends at 3:30 on Friday. Bus transportation from Oquossoc, Rangeley, Dallas and Sandy River, will be provided for all campers.

Our Philosophy

EcoVenture is dedicated to providing campers with a variety of fun and exciting outdoor learning activities. Guided by our dedicated staff, the activities will:
  • Awaken camper curiosity about nature.
  • Engage the hearts of campers as they explore and connect to the natural world.
  • Develop a stewardship ethic as campers begin to understand the impacts their choices have upon the rest of our natural world.
  • Promote the development of team building and problem solving skills

Important Registration Information

EcoVenture, now in its 11th year, has become tremendously popular and has tripled its number of campers. The fee for 1st through 5th grade campers is $50 for the first camper in a family and $25 for each additional camper). The fee for the 6th through 9th grade overnight campers is $100 per camper.

For the 2009 summer season, we strongly encourage all campers to register by June 19th. Registration materials will be mailed out by June 1st to RLHT members and to non-members who request them. At the same time, children attending the Rangeley Lakes Regional School will receive a package of registration materials to carry home. Registrations will not be accepted until materials are mailed out and given to the local schoolchildren.

Due to the increasing popularity of our program and the limited number of available spaces, we give priority to Rangeley schoolchildren and the children and grandchildren of RLHT members. For those of you who would like to join RLHT, a Friend membership is just $25. We encourage campers to register as soon as possible after materials are distributed.

Activities

Each camp day brings a variety of age-appropriate activities including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, low ropes challenges, nature-based games and workshops, art and music. The older campers also go on exciting overnight trips in the Rangeley region where they have fun while learning low impact camping skills.
Campers bring their own lunch each day and are asked to dress and bring personal supplies based on the activities planned (swim suits, sun block, etc.)

Camper Groups

EcoVenture campers are divided into groups by their age and grade in school.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:50 to 3:00:

  • Grasshoppers (entering 1st grade)
  • Brookies (entering grades 2 and 3)
  • Hawks (entering grades 4 and 5)

Thursdays and Fridays from 8:50 to 3:30 with the overnights scheduled for July 16th and August 6th (campers will arrive at 8:50 on Thursdays, camp out for the night, and go home at 3:30 on Fridays).

  • Black Bears (entering grades 6 and 7)
  • Cougars (entering grades 8 and 9)

Volunteers are needed!

Can You Help?? Providing a fun and safe experience in the outdoors is the ultimate goal of EcoVenture. By lending a hand as a volunteer you will help us succeed while having a lot of fun!

There are many ways to help:

  • Assist the counselors with their daily activities or programs.
  • Join us on a daytrip or overnight outing - canoe, kayak, hike, or fish.
  • Help with phone calls, paperwork, and other office activities.

At Camp Wigwam, our 26 acre property on South Shore Drive, we still need help with trail construction and maintenance, painting, carpentry, grounds work, etc.
